Rooted in my background in fashion illustration, Ballerina began as part of an early series of observational sketches exploring movement, proportion and form. Inspired by the elegance and discipline of ballet, and influenced by Edgar Degas’ iconic studies of dancers, the piece captures the quiet beauty and fleeting gestures of the ballerina.
Expressive, fluid linework places emphasis on silhouette, posture and grace rather than realism, allowing the figure to emerge softly through layers of colour and texture. The influence of fashion illustration can be seen in the simplicity and confidence of the drawn form, while the muted blush palette lends the work an ethereal, almost dreamlike quality.
Elegant and quietly expressive, Ballerina is a contemporary interpretation of the timeless relationship between art, movement and dance.
